Zhang Liang Malatang Haymarket stands out as a vibrant self-service spot nestled in the heart of Sydney’s Chinatown at Shop 1B&1C/718 George St. It offers a hands-on dining experience where guests build their own bowls, choosing from an extensive range of fresh meats, vegetables, and noodles. This interactive style invites diners to customize every bite, making it an ideal choice for those who enjoy bold, spicy flavors and crave authentic Sichuan cuisine.

For those who prefer lighter fare, the mushroom soup and spinach noodles make excellent options, all complemented beautifully by a variety of sauces to fine-tune the intensity and depth of flavor.

I accidentally lost my wallet at Zhang Liang Malatang, and the staff found it and kept it safe for me. I was honestly shocked and so grateful when I came back to look for it — such honesty and kindness! On top of that, the food here is as delicious as always. Both the spicy mix with spicy sauce and the spicy tomato soup are absolutely worth trying!

Food was so good, definitely on the spicier side. Everything was laid out easy to access and had lots of options for meats and veggies. Food came out really quick to. Only spent $20 on my hot pot so very affordable but quite busy.

Visited Zhang Liang Malatang in Haymarket for lunch and it totally hit the spot. The broth was bold and flavorful, with that perfect balance of spice and numbing heat. I loved being able to choose my own ingredients — veggies, noodles, and meats — and everything came out perfectly cooked. The place was clean, fast, and had that true authentic Sichuan street-food vibe. A must-try if you’re craving something spicy and satisfying in the city.

The place was packed when I arrived, which is always a good sign! There were so many choices — plenty of meat and veggie options, plus different kinds of soup. The first time I ordered, I thought it would come as a soup, but it turned out to be stir-fried noodles instead. A nice surprise — and it was delicious!

Came for lunch with my family, and we were pretty surprised by the variety of options available. The menu had a decent selection of protein choices and vegetables, along with various soup bases and many condiments. We decided to try the traditional mala soup. The flavor was fantastic, spicy and satisfying. I did notice that seating can be quite limited, especially during peak lunch hours. This could be a challenge for larger groups or during busy times, so it might be wise to arrive early or be prepared to wait. Overall, it was a lovely experience and we left feeling full and content.

If you’re looking for a fun, DIY-style hotpot experience, Zhangliang Spicy Hotpot is a must-try! The self-serve ingredient section is incredibly extensive — from fresh veggies and noodles to meats, seafood, and all kinds of fish balls and tofu varieties. Everything is neatly organized and looks very fresh. You can choose between dry spicy bowls or hotpot soup styles, and both options are packed with flavour. I loved the rich, numbing mala seasoning in the dry version, and the soup base options were comforting and hearty. The spicy level is adjustable, which is great for different preferences. Prices are based on weight, so it’s easy to go overboard if you’re not careful — but totally worth it if you want variety. The seating area is clean and simple, and the staff are friendly but quite hands-off since it’s mostly self-service. A great spot for casual dining, especially if you’re craving bold, spicy flavours and a customisable meal!

What fun to grab a big bowl and combine all the ingredients that you want in your soup! Several different types of soup you can use to do the cooking, or you can have it cooked dry, like a Mongolian BBQ. Must be a hundred different varieties of meats, vegetables, mushrooms, greens. Mostly very fresh, but some were frozen. Reasonable price. AU $17 her 500 g. Don't put in too much of the ingredients, because you will have a lot left over. Very yummy and healthy

I wanted to try their laksa soup but unfortunately it wasn’t available when I ordered so I went with the dry wok instead. The food itself was tasty, though it took about 20 minutes to arrive. The staff felt a bit rushed and not very friendly. But overall, the food was worth the wait.
